Imphal : Yet another feather in the cap was added to Irom Sharmila Chanu, who has been fasting for 10 years demanding the Government to withdraw the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958. Sharmila has received as many as eight awards including international awards in recognition of her struggle for humanity.

The Rabindranath Tagore Peace Prize-2010 instituted by the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) was handed over to the Iron Lady at her special security ward of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal where she is kept under custodial remand.

The award consists of 51 lakh rupees in cash, one shawl and one citation.

Handing over the award to Sharmila, Founder Chairperson of IIPM, Dr Malay Chauduri said that, Rabindranath Tagore always stood for peace and against barbaric activities.He added that his institute will try at its best to inculcate the morale of Sharmila who is fighting against barbaric activities to bring peace in the state. Choudury said that it is a rare event that a woman has been fasting for the last 10 years.

Malay Chaudhuri said,“Sharmila is a of the unique lady of the country. We’re conferring the award for her determination and courage in her guest for peace”. Her struggle and patience will inspire the students of his institute, he added.

Receiving the peace prize, Sharmila said that, the money of the award will be donated to the services of containing anti-social elements and helping the welfare activities of the people.

“I am not demanding the removal of the draconian Act not only from my state, Manipur, but from all places where it is in force, Sharmila in a low voice said adding that people specially women are suffering a great deal under the Act.

Sharmila’s brother Irom Singhajit who was present in the handing over of the ward said, “The award money will be utilized to conduct various programmes related to her ongoing campaign”.

Singhajit is the managing trustee of Just Peace Foundation, a rights group supporting Sharmila’s struggle and organizing a 100-day countdown to the completion of a decade-long fast by Irom Sharmila with a call for a united struggle against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.

Poster campaigns, street corner meetings, symposiums, kavi sammelan and human chains were some of the activities of the countdown,he added.Sharmila has been on a fast unto death since November 4, 2000 demanding the Government to withdraw the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.

Sharmila began her strike after the Assam Rifles killed 10 civilians at Malom near Imphal airport on November 2, 2000, and will be completing 10 years of her fast against the “draconian law”, on November 1. The award is funded by a consortium of institutes and universities in Asia and Europe,is conferred on individuals and groups who have made a significant contribution in the areas of people’s economics/ people-centric management/ literature/ peace.

Sharmila has also been honoured with many other awards including the coveted Gwangju Human Rights Award by the South Korean-based May 18 Memorial Foundation.

Hueiyen News Service : There is no dispute when a distraught Okram Ibobi says that the rampant ubiquitous sale of petrol and diesel beside the asphalt and gravelled roads in the backdrop of the padlocked oil pumps in Manipur is not seen anywhere. What he had not said was that the government inaction in this regard is also unparalleled and it is a world class joke. Perhaps the authorities are not cracking the whip as this world record is coveted and the posterity will be proud of it.
The blackmarketeers and the roadside vendors continue to get patronage and carte blanche so much so that they are operating freely without caring two hoots. This incomprehensible government inaction is really puzzling and shameful. It is a bitter fact that notwithstanding the free sale of fuel in this illegal manner nobody has been pulled up and the blackmarketeers have become more brazen and haughty. Not surprisingly the opposition parties are not flaying the government for this signal failure to come to the rescue of the people who have to pay Rs 160 for a litre of highly adulterated petrol since kerosene had vanished from the market.
The blackmarketeers and speculators have many good reasons to be grateful to the organisors of the protracted blockade since they are earning net profit in five figures every day. The sleazy characters have got to the gravy train while the people, the opposition parties and all others remain as mute spectators. The way the government machinery remains paralysed despite the fact that the Chief Minister had publicly acknowledged the peculiar situation should have drawn the attention of the Union government. But then the people of Manipur are much below the rung than those of Bihar or UP. In any case the people of Manipur are not making a fuss. So why should the central leaders bray for them ?
Since the beginning of the Naga blockade against Manipur when one litre of petrol was sold under the nose of the authority at Rs 160 I have been buying it from a local woman. Now it has come down to Rs 70 a litre though it fluctuates depending on the landslips and other vagaries of the nature. I assure her that even if the petrol pumps are open I shall continue to buy from her at the exorbitant price. She is one of the vendors doing brisk business by the roadside. I had facetiously remarked that she would soon be buying a sleek car. She smirked and said that she was actually planning to buy one. In a philosophical soliloquy she adds that the local residents will say that she has bought it out of the profit she has earned.
A politician like Mamta Bannerjee would have launched an effective campaign against the open blackmarket had Manipur been West Bengal. We are very unfortunate to have been born in this neglected state. One Minister had taken the role of the opposition exposing the involvement some paramilitary personnel in the thriving fuel business. The Minister still continues to get brickbats for this public spirited expose.
In view of the numerous recurring blockades, general strikes and other forms of disruption of normal life some scheming persons had stocked petrol and diesel just at the outhouse for sale at exorbitant rates. There had been devastating fires claiming some lives. The mushrooming kiosks and roadside vendors have no safety precautions and it is a mystery that people are not roasted alive. Some fences have also business links with some government drivers who happen to be the perennial source of petrol. This explains why petrol pumps are open only during day time; they are also shut down on many flimsy pretexts, the most common being the recurring general strikes. Petrol pumps are open round the clock even in Nagaland where all shops and kiosks pull down shutters by evening.
The paralysis of the government in this regard could well be explained. It is also disappointing that there is no citizens' group or NGO to contain this burgeoning problem which result in fleecing the people. But then why look at the half empty glass and not the half full glass ? There is a positive side of the blockades and the local economists should highlight it. Several thousands of persons who have not been earning anything all these years had started earning four figure profit by selling petrol and diesel. The figure is still higher for those who deal in the cooking gas cylinders. A family with gas connection or a person with a sleek car or high speed two wheeler can easily afford to spend a little more. And all of them have been doing it anyway. But then some of the blackmarketeers have earned so much in the past few months that they may make their presence felt as "social workers" to contest elections in due course. This system of money circulation is something Russia could have learned from Manipur.

India's Look East Policy and Extinction of Manipuris

A team of Ambassadors/High Commissioners of ASEAN countries visiting Manipur on 19th and 20th of this month (September) as a part of the initiative of India's Look East Policy is indicative of the fact that the Look East Policy is definitely taking shape. As yet there is no concrete policy framework available of what the Look East Policy comprises of but what is envisaged is that India is going to open up the North East corridor through Manipur, into Myanmar and on to the ASEAN countries to bring about greater economic ties with these nations. In the next decade or so a positive development of how things would shape up in pursuance of this policy would be more clear.

Having said this let us endeavour to open up our proverbial third eye and carry out a thought experiment of how the Look East Policy would have concretized in the next couple of decades, what effect it would have had on Manipur and how it would have facilitated the economic growth of the State. Will it actually be a boon or bane for the people of Manipur?

Trans-Asian Highway passing through Silchar-Jiribam-Imphal-Moreh and on to Myanmar would be fully functional and trucking service would be in full swing. Likewise Trans-Asian Railway again passing through this route and extending up to the ASEAN countries would be in place and wholly functional. There would be at least two major rail heads - one on the outskirts of Imphal to cater to the needs of Imphal City and the other at Moreh. This town would no more be a trade center as it exists today, instead it would have graduated to an import and export economic zone, it would be the hub center for all economic activities passing through this corridor to and from the ASEAN countries. The present list of 40 trade items would have been redundant and hopefully there would be no restriction on any item of trade but for the internationally banned/restricted items such as psychotropic drugs, weapons and munitions of war etc.

Businessmen and traders along with their staff and employees from all over India would have flooded Manipur. A number of ware houses would have come up along with business establishments mostly in Imphal and of course at Moreh. The place would be teeming with non-Manipuris of all hues and colour. There are no industrialists in Manipur and of course no industries whatsoever. There are a few small time traders and a few dilapidated workshops which people wrongly name as industries. The only way of making money known to one and all in Manipur is either through siphoning off of the government coffers or through the Money Minting Industry at Gun Point. But they cannot be termed as industry in the real sense of the word. Obviously therefore it would be the big business houses of the likes of Tatas and Birlas from mainland India who would have zoomed down and occupied and controlled all the economic activities of the State. Manipur would in effect become only a transit State for these big business houses from mainland India.

The cascading effect this development will have to the people of Manipur would be limited to opening up of a few tea stalls along the Trans-Asian highway to cater to the needs of the truckers and a few more tea stalls in the railway stations. Some road side eateries locally called 'Rice Hotels' would also come up. And of course a few 'Moreh Dukans' will definitely come up in the lanes and by-lanes of the State. Economic growth of the State will still be zero as it is today and it will continue to survive on the periodical doles that the Center provides from time to time unless the State Government takes up the issue of opening up of economic avenues in the State in terms of creating "Special Economic Zones" and allied facilities to ensure that Imphal becomes the overall economic hub center of the entire economic activity of the region. But it would be ludicrous to expect anything futuristic from the present SPF Government who cannot think or see beyond the issuance of next contract work or holding of the next recruitment DPC since as far as this SPF Government is concerned, governance begins and ends with these two very, very important functions and all others are sundry commitments.

Now what is more horrifying is not this dilemma of a futuristic situation of economic damnation but a more sinister development in the offing. With the massive influx of business people from mainland India who are bound to establish large business estates in Manipur, it is a foregone conclusion that they would be acquiring large tracts of land to establish their economic empires in the State. Only those land which come under the purview of State's MLR and R Act will be sold since that is the only saleable land available. Translated into elementary English it means Meiteis by and large will be compelled by circumstances to sell off their land and find new dwelling areas outside of Manipur in Assam or wherever their destiny takes them.

The population of 16 odd lakh Meiteis is a very small minority when seen against the backdrop of the national population ratio. Infact it is much less than the voter list of Shri Ram Vilas Paswan, MP. This small group of indigenous people will slowly but surely become a minority in their own land. Further, given the logic of survival of the (economically) fittest the Meiteis will become extinct in Manipur in a not so distant a future. This metamorphosis may not be evident today or tomorrow. But once the cycle of extinction is allowed to be initiated, then there is no stopping this juggernaut. Meiteis will definitely be trapped on the conveyer belt of this extinction cycle and propelled helplessly till they are totally extinct from the face of Manipur. It may take ages or even decades, time is no consideration but the fact of extinction is certain - the writing on the wall is very clear. That perhaps is the consequence of the riddle behind the proverbial Nongpok Thong Haangba (opening of the Eastern Gate) as given in the old Meitei Scriptures.

In Manipur everyone today is so terribly tied up and concerned with their present that they neither have the sensibility nor the courage to look at the future. Therefore the million dollar question is, "Are the Meiteis destined to be doomed with India's Look East Policy? And are they to accept this fact of extinction from the face of Manipur as fait accompli?" No, certainly not! And by the way no where in this world economic migrants have been stopped through the barrel of the gun.

The solution lies with the so called 60 representatives of the people of this State. Without manifesting any animosity towards the non-Manipuris the instinct of self preservation must be awakened. If only these 60 representatives could put their heads together, legislate and pass an act within the framework of the Indian Constitution to protect the endangered specie called Meiteis from extinction from their natural habitat of Manipur, by illegalizing (making it unlawful) sale of any part of this natural habitat to any non-indigenous person from outside of Manipur (the language of the Act is a matter of detail, the crux of the issue being to prevent the sale of land to non-Manipuris), then and only then will this "Nongpok Thong Haangba" have its true and positive meaning as envisioned by the ancient Meiteis. But who is going to bell this inert cat?

AGENCIES, Aug 13 : A man, who the doctors suspected to be suffering from a cancerous tumor, is found to have a pea sprou-ting inside his windpipe."My blood pressure was very low. My oxygen count was very low. I was dehydrated, my left lung collapsed, and I had pneumonia," 75-yr-old Ron Sveden from Brewster told the Herald. After an X-ray showed a spot on Sveden's windpipe, Cape CodHospital doctors thought the retired teacher was suffering from a cancerous tumor.

"Prior to Memorial Day I was going down hill," Sveden said. "My appetite went away and I was coughing a lot. I just had this listless feeling where I just wanted to lie down. I had no ambition to do anything."After samples were tested, doctors told Sveden that the spot was not cancer but a plant sprouting inside him.

It seems Sveden had been eating peas, one went down the wrong pipe, then grew to an inch-and-a-half in his lung, collapsing it.

Through surgery they removed the plant and Sveden's health improved.

"Thankfully it's all over," he said. With a good sense of humor and new outlook of life he deals with friends and family affectionately calling him "pea brain" showering him with cans of peas and bags of seeds.

The proposed Japanese Second World War memorial hospital to be funded by the Japanese government will be constructed at Lousi Loukon of Khabeisoi in Imphal east district. A sign board to mark the allocation of the land was erected today.

The hospital is to be constructed under the Japanese Second World War Memorial Hospital Act with financial assistance from the Japanese government under its Grand Grass Root Project. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 6 crore.

Out of the around 40 acre land required for the construction of the hospital, one acre of land has been acquired by the hospital construction authority, said controller of the Japanese Hospital Manipur,

M Ibomcha, who was speaking at the function organised in connection with the sign board erection.

Earlier, the hospital was planned to be constructed at Yainangpokpi but as per guidelines the hospital could not be located beyond a 10 km radius of the state capital. Following a review it was decided that the hospital be constructed at Khabeisoi, the controller clarified.

The proposed hospital is targeted to deliver a unique healthcare service to the people of the state and once the hospital comes up, inconveniences faced by the people in going outside the state for medical treatment will be reduced to some extent.

Doctors of the proposed hospital will work in coordination with doctors in Japan while treating complicated patients, he said while appealing to the people to extend co-operation in the setting up of the hospital in the area.

An 18-year old girl, who fell unconscious while security personnel threatened to kill her, is still to regain consciousness at Shija Hospital even after four days after the incident.Thokchom Choaba alias Madhuri daughter of Jadumani of Khangabok Mayai Leikai of Thoubal district, a science student of Standard-XI studying at Vision Creative School of Science, Thoubal Okram Chuthek fell unconscious when some security personnel, after entering the Sarojini Oil filling Station, at about 11.30 pm of August 8 last, threatened to kill all the people there.

Sorojini, the mother of the girl, recalling the incident, said that at about 11.30 pm in the night, some people knocked at the gate of the oil pump where her family stays. When asked, they indentified themselves as security personnel.

When, she refused to open the gate saying that no male member was in the house, they threatened to enter the house by breaking the gate or to set the oil pump on fire. They also threatened to kill all the members in the house and tried to enter the house by breaking the gate, the mother said. Compelled by the situation, Chaoba informed the Thoubal police commandos. Some minutes later the gate was knocked once again with the information that it was the police commandos coming in response to Chaoba’s call.

When she opened the gate army personnel followed by the police commandos entered inside their house and interrogated two Nepalese at the pump after calling out them outside the house. Later, alleging that they were lying by saying that no male members were in the house, they threatened that all members in the house shot and killed. The Army personnel also dragged out the bed ridden ailing uncle of Chaoba from his bed.

On seeing her uncle being dragged, Chaoba fainted. She was immediately rushed at Thoubal district hospital, Sorojini said. They could not take Chaoba to a hospital in Imphal as the Army personnel blocked them asking to provide the registration number of the vehicle they are going to proceed in and the name of the hospital where she was to be treated.

She was shifted to Shija Hospital on the next day and is still unconscious, the mother said adding that the doctors said that her recovery will take sometime.

I must Earn 3$ ( Rs 104) to Keep My family Survive

IMPHAL, Aug 1 : “I must earn at the least Rs 104 ( 3 $) for every day to keep the kitchen fire burning and ensure that my children do not starve”, said Memcha, a vegetable vendor at Pishum Keithel.

“Though I can fill the stomach of my children, I’m in no condition to send them to school”, Memcha said in a disapponting tone.

For Memcha, Rs.104 ( 3 $) is a must. Anything less than this amount means herfamily consisting of her invalid husband and five children would go hungry for the day. Rs 104 is for buying four kilograms of rice which now costs Rs 26 per Kg.

At times of bandh or general strike, the family has to buy rice on credit. But it is always a huge burden for Memcha as she is obliged to pay for the rice bought on credit after bandh/strike.

After the prolonged economic blockade on National Highways and subsequent decision of transporters not to take NH 39, which has resulted in sky-high prices of essential commodities, Memcha and thousands of families like hers have to struggle for survival against all odds, not for well being.

With petrol and diesel not available at oil pumps though available in the black markets at Rs 75 per litre and Rs 60 per litre respectively, travel fares have also doubled.

Local rice now costs Rs 25/26 per Kg while the price of a match-box has jumped to Rs 2 from Re 1 pushing many families into deep distress.

Prices of all other food items like potato, dal, chilly, ngari etc have also escalated beyond the reach of many families.

With despair writ large on her sun tanned face, Memcha said “when prices of all food items are so high, I fear struggling families like ours would be able to survive the crisis or not”.

Whatever proceeds Memcha earns from her vegetable trade go into buying rice after subtracting travel fare. “Till last year, I could send my children to school. But this year I can no longer afford their educational expenditures”, Memcha said. Memcha’s three elder children should be reading in Class VII, Class VI and Class III this year. The younger two have not reached schooling age.

“I’m disappointed that all my children have dropped out from school but I’m helpless”, Memcha lamented. All three of them were studying in private school but they have dropped out because their mother could not pay the school fees.

Even as Memcha suggested her children to go to a Govt school, the children are reluctant and said that no proper education can be expected from a Govt school.

For Memcha, it is an inescapable routine duty to rise early morning, go to Khwairamband Keithel, buy seasonal vegetables and re-sell them at Pishum Keithel for some trifling profit till eight in the evening.

Then she would go back home buying rice with the day’s profit. Memcha, just 37 years old, is also braving rain, sun, wind and all kinds of inconveniences for she owns no seat in the market shed. She is doing her business in the open, at road side with just old, worn out umbrella over her head.

But Memcha fears neither wind nor sun nor rain. What is most dreaded to the young struggling woman are bandhs, strikes and curfews

220 Species of Orchids in Manipur

The orchid Preservation Centre, Khonghampat, under the Wildlife Wing of Forest Department, Government of Manipur, 12 km north of Imphal city on National Highway 39, is said to be preserving about 220 species of orchids including the rare and endangered species.

Among the highly threatened species of orchids specified in Schedule-VI of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, three species namely, Blue vanda (Vanda Coerulea) (Kwaklei), Red vanda (Renanthera imschootiana) (Kwaklei Angangba) and Lady's slipper (Paphiopedilum spp.) (Khongup Lei) are at present being preserved at the Centre, reports received from the Centre said.

There are also three other orchid species endemic to Manipur, namely– Ascocentrum ampullaceum var.auruanticum (Nachom Lei), Schoenorchis manipurensis and Kalimpongia narjitii.

The reports further said that the North Eastern region is estimated to have about 600 species of orchids. As per Biological Survery of India (BSI), Manipur alone is considered to have about 450 species. The Khonghampat Centre is an ex-situ preservation centre with about 220 species of orchids.
The Centre is also preserving various species of trees, bamboos and other imortant rare and vanishing plants of the state. Among them, species such as, Agar (Aquileria agalocha), Ushingsha (Cinamomum zelanicm), Hing (Ferula asafoetida), Ficus krishnae (Makhan katori), Tairel (edrela toona), Heirangoi (Amoora rohituka), Budha's bamboo (Babusa vulgaris forma waminii), Apatani bamboo (phyllotachys), Kwamanbi (Smilex lanceifolia), Yendang (Cycas pectinata), Chandrika (Rauwolfia serpentine), Bokul (Mimusops elengii), (Nageshwar (Mesua ferrea), Glory lily (Gloriosa superba) and Ashoka treee (Saraca indica).

The reports further said that the Centre is planning to collect and preserve more indegenous orchid species and develope new hybrids by crossing with the superior species, among others.

An official source said that the Centre is preparing to add more species making the number 250.

The Orchid Preservation Centre, Khonghampat will be bringing out a book containing the photographs and descriptions of all the orchids species preserved at the Centre soon.

Haeundae-gu is a gu in eastern Busan, South Korea. It has an area of 51.44 km², and a population of about 423,000. This represents about 11.6% of the population in Busan.[2] It became a division of Busan in 1976 and attained the status of gu in 1980.

Haeundae-gu can be reached easily on the subway, Busan Subway Line 2, or by train on the Donghae Nambu railway line from outside of Busan. Both Haeundae subway and train stations are built adjacent to each other.

Haeundae is now an affluent, beach front community that attracts tens of thousands of Korean tourists and foreigners to what many consider to be Korea's best beach. It has been subject to considerable commercial development.

I thought how they are going to manage such huge number of people. Our friends start gathering and we were checked for security and enter the most precious place of Korea the The Cheong Wa Dae with high security.

We saw so many people gathered there and with Taekwondo dress and many other people with Dressed with World Friends T-shirt. The gathering were excited to meet Mr President there were ambassadors from other countries and we were also among them.

The moment arrive and we could able to see Mr President and The First Lady of Korea. We welcome them with our heart and we had a chance to meet them so closed I never expected. They were so simple and happy peace loving person. We take part in National Anthem Keeping our right hand to our heart filling the Natonal anthem.

Yesterday I attain Korea Marriage ceremony. It was so short in just 30 min the marriage is end. Its not like Indian marriage where it take so long. Both couple were so happy I dont know what are the words use by the priest to bind the couple. At first the groom enter the stage and introduced there after the Bride. The priest announced them married couple and they had family and friends picture session the marriage was so short.

Our tradition we give Dakhina to all the people who attain the function. In korea also the similar like Dakhina was distributed with thank giving notes.

Holi celebration in Dongseo University. Holi an Indian Festival the festival for colors despite of male and female we put colors. Holi the festival welcoming the spring seasons.
Even though staying in Korea we celebrate the festival with other nation and we share all the colorful color to each other.

Some interesting fact, I try to put color to my friend trying to see the place where I can put color. If I dont find a place to put color, I search a small space to fill the color. It is interesting that until and unless we fill the color to the person face we wan put color again and again.

Once we fill the person face we try to search a place where we can color more colors..So the option is put color on hairs, and it could be further extend by putting the whole water with fill with color to the person body to get stain.

How do I protect my skin, I put some oily cream before so that I color should not stick longer to my skin. So once the color is over I was with plain water and with soap and ever thing was clear.

Staying is hostel and playing with color with so many people was enjoyable never the less we clean our whole hostel again. It was interesting and joyful. After playing with color we eat Indian food which was prepared in our hostel.I was little worried with the other friends from different countries they say they enjoy with color but it might be little strange for them. But never the less these year holi will bring a new color to our life with new and old friends. Happy Hoil..

I try to search varieties of rice related product these are few out of so many.I try to know the test of such product and realize that it was so good. These might be the reason why most of they have all these varieties of smack made up of rice. During Korean new year, I could find all those varieties together. I selected some of these gift as present for new years. Those colorful varieties, soft and test like honey. Never miss to buy it when u come to Korea.

It was a few days before Korean New year, I was interest to know what were the gift available in market . Interestingly I could able to see some of the most expensive gift...

"Wild mushroom" when I was in India I used to collect so many mushroom and was trying to identify. But after this few picture I came to realise that those mushroom worth 120,000 Won only for 200mg one piece.

Well its is true that mushroom has so may medicinal application and consumed as food or as drink.

I never try to realize the exact price for some of these mushroom.
But today I realize the price of those mushroom.

Feb 2010,

Feb is going to end. I forget what was my target. From the day one I thought and plan to do something new, but it seems that the new thought came only at the end of the month....

12 to 16 Feb was holiday, even though I was engaged with my target. I thought that I will start something new. Taking the opportunity of "Korean New year" the 14 th of Feb. I thought I can do something new but never happen...So I regret.

It was a coincidence, Korea new year and valentine day fall in the same day.. I thought why shall I not enjoy the day but my thought became just a thought.

14 Feb early morning my eyes open and saw the mountain back to my drom was covered with snow ....

I thought it was a lucky day because Snow fall in Busan is very rare and it fall in a very rare occasion. In Korea people say if there is snow fall girl friend or boyfriend call up each other and great. But for me it was little different.

Outside the temperature was very low and I wan to sleep more.

But my sleep broke up as one of my friend wake me up. I was a lazy guy but as soon as I wake up ,I call up my friends and wish them Happy New Year...

Well I would have miss the opportunity to see the Snow fall covering the wide mountain.
